Islamic prayer service offered for Ethiopian Airlines pilot Yared Gatechew

Hundreds of mourners have attended a Muslim funeral prayer for 29-year-old pilot Yared Mulugeta Gatechew who was killed in the Ethiopian Airlines crash on March 10.

Known as the prayer in absentia (Salat al- Gha’ib), the service was held at the famous Baluch mosque in Kenya’s coastal city of Mombasa on Tuesday evening.

The holding of the prayer in absentia indicates that Senior Capt Yared’s fam body is yet to be recovered.

Among those who attended the prayers were close family members led by the victim’s uncle Khalid Shapi who is the Managing Director of Pollmans Tours and Safaris Limited.

Getachew, a Kenyan Muslim of Ethiopian heritage, was only 29 years old and schooled at Oshwal High School in Nairobi.

According to the airlines Group CEO, Mr Tewolde Gebre-Mariam,  Getachew was a senior pilot who had been flying the same plane since November 2007.

Ethiopian pilots and flight crew held a vigil on Monday morning in Addis Ababa.
