Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali arrived in the Eritrean capital, Asmara, today to participate in a tripartite summit with Eritrean leader, Isaias Afwerki.
The three leaders are expected to discuss regional issues at the summit and later have separate bilateral meetings.
Since the rapprochement between Ethiopia and Eritrea after Abiy came to power last year, the region has witnessed calls for closer integration between the Horn of Africa nations.
A similar tripartite meeting last year brought together leaders of Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia, which led to the normalization of relations between Mogadishu and Asmara after years of strained relations.
In September last year, Eritrea and Djibouti agreed to normalize ties a decade after a border dispute led to brief military clashes between the two countries.
